We decided to go for the ‘It never happened’ Lane 8 tour and with it being my first time at Phonox I was amazed by the way the staff and layout of the venue really worked for everyone, guests and staff!

The Door staff and girls on the door were really happy and fun and we even had a joke or two with them which is rare in London.

Upon getting to the bar although it was busy and we had to wait to be served the bar staff were vibing and bouncing whilst they worked!

NOW THE ACTUAL NIGHT WAS INCREDIBLE! Sound system - tick. Lightshow -tick! Prices - tick! As a serial techhead and house junkie I was in heaven so was overall an awesome night. Reading some of these other reviews is a bit soul destroying because they sound super precious or wild (in a bad way) - ITS NOT MAGALUF BABES - ;)

As promised to the manager on the night of our visit, here is the lowdown on Phonox as we saw it.
We travelled down from Leeds specifically for the Andrew Weatherall and Ewan Pearson gig Fri 16/03/18.
From the first interaction with the very welcoming security team, through to the happiest and most helpful bar staff I've encountered EVER down in that there London, our trip was a raging success.
The Guvnor and Ewan were on blisteringly twisted form, totally screwing with all our heads on the dance floor which contained yet more friendly happy people.
Bar prices were the same as we pay in Leeds city centre clubs and bars, cloakroom was spotless and in perfect order, the sound system was beautifully crisp and unbelievably, air conditioning that actually did the job properly........

Where's the arrogant, mercenary, and hostile London clubland that killed it off for me down there around 15 years back?
You wanna be careful being as good as this, people will start to talk!!!!

All in all, worth every penny we spent. Worth the train journey home the following afternoon in the awful blizzard and every ache that both our well over 40 year old frames threw at us the next couple of days!

On the night I spoke to the boss man down in the basement bar, saying how much we were enjoying our night and how impressed we were with the venue as a whole. He asked only one thing, if that's how we felt could we possibly post a review on Trip Advisor and say it out loud.

I like to keep a promise.
So here it is.
Phonox. 10/10.
On all fronts.
We are already planning for another trip there, this time with some of our fellow Leeds club loving pals in tow.
Cheers.

Phonox has rapidly become my favorite destination for clubbing in London over the past year. The main reasons for this are:
- The friendly staff. They are not aggressive or unreasonable and they genuinely want you to have a good time. Very helpful with any issues and always happy to be there.
- The best music. The music and resident DJs are great, awesome mix of techno, tech-house, disco and house. The music isn't basic, so don't come here expecting chart music, but if you're into good baselines and melodic pieces then you'll enjoy Phonox.
- Inclusive, friendly atmosphere. The club is about the music first and foremost, making it a friendly and fun place. I generally meet nice people here, often on the same wavelength and interested in the artists performing.

I used to go here when it was an urban venue, but it's since reinvented itself as a reliable and energetic up-tempo venue. Definitely worth a visit if you're in a dancing mood!

Pretty spot on
Went here for one of Midland's residency slots. His set was nice. Crowd seemed to enjoy it. Pretty classic south London club to be honest. Sound system was pretty dece, and the downstair lickle bar was a nice touch. Staff were sound. Would go again

Amazing staff. Amazing sound. Amazing lights.
Been 4 or 5 times now and can't rate it highly enough. The management are absolutely wonderful, and every member of staff too. Friendly behind the bars, friendly on the door. I think it's a really important quality that sets it apart from all the other clubs. When you have friendly staff, you have friendly clubbers. Really nice vibes inside from everyone.

As for the sound system and lights they have - second to none. Incredible display all for your enjoyment. Highlights were Romare (two times) and DJ Haai.

Reminds me of Berlin
I visited to see Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston and I found the staff to be very friendly, even the security. Very impressed with overall sound, the club itself is quite smallish but the sound system is on point. Very nice lighting as well, not too over the top. Th music and atmosphere was just on another level.

It was my first time at Phonox and I think this is the closest thing you'll get in London to going to a club in Berlin.

Brilliant club with excellent staff
What's most memorable about Phonox (after the amazing music) is how friendly and helpful all members of staff there are. It's also an amazing club with great lighting effects. I'm also a big fan of there no phones on the dance floor policy!

I only go to their Sunday day sessions so my rating is only for those events. The cloakroom queue is fast. The waits at the bar are minimal and the security are quick and efficient. Their Sunday bookings have been spectacular for a while now too. Would definitely recommend.

Like the music, one of the outdoor staff organising the queue outside (not a bouncer) basically squared up to me last time I went on a Sunday evening for absolutely no reason "I'm talking to you, what's your problem?" - for having an earphone in and not hearing what he said, absurd.

Amazing sound system! They also have a decent music policy and attract a friendly crowd on all the nights I've attended. Staff are also professional, including security.

Really great club, they have a nice space on the side of the dance floor that is good to chill in when you need a break and a quieter downstairs bar. Can get very busy though.

Nice downstairs bar with lots of seats to hang out and take a break from the dancefloor. The dancefloor needs better airflow and is quite hot even on a cool winter evening. The speakers are okay but was at fabric the night before and you can tell the speakers here were far worse quality. Bathrooms quite dirty.

What a venue. I am a regular customer and the staff always greet me like I am one of their own. The music is fantastic, the lighting is even more mind blowing. Worth a mention that it has been nominated for the best small club in the UK. Very proud to call it my go-to club. Keep being you Phonox

Phenomenal club. Super well run, well-ventilated, great relax areas, top DJ's and a very good sound system (not too loud but loud enough). People are very chill and there's a great vibe overall

Definitely deserves five stars, even though it's not 100% perfect.
Pro
* Nice happy crowd, with an average age of about 20. They were quite accepting of us old farts.
* Courteous bouncers, both outside and on the floor. They seemed OK with selfies, so I guess the selfie ban is an old policy that has been dropped.
* Easy 2 minute queue at 11.30pm
* More bartenders than you could shake a stick at, with 9 at the main bar and 3 more downstairs. Never any crowd to get served, even on a night with a headliner like DJ Sprinkles.
* Fair pricing. £10 in advance for the door, £2 cloak room, and £5 single / £8 double spirits.
* Clean toilets, and no queue for the ladies anytime in the night.
Con
* Good sound system that is loud enough, but is missing the bone rattling bass that I prefer.
* Basement bar closed at 2am, so there was no chill out zone any more.

Absolutely class night at Phonox, and some of that was down to how good Palms Trax was but the club was great.
Good points were the sound system was top notch, the space is great and never felt too crowded, the downstairs bar was a great wee chill out zone, bar prices were relatively cheap and never had to wait. Big thing that stood out was how sound the bouncers were. Best I've experienced in a club ever and genuinely got the impression they were trying to look after people in there and contribute towards you having a good time.
Drawbacks were the lack of free drinking water and the fact they closed the downstairs bar with a couple of hours to go. Even if it stopped selling drinks it's an amazing chill out zone and had an extra toilet so it's a big miss closing it, can't understand the logic.
I can't wait to come back.

Description

Phonox is a nightclub designed for early evening drinks as well as late night partying, all under one roof. With the bar split over two floors and an outside area they have the privilege of a multi-faceted space which evolves throughout the night. The bar is open every week from 9pm, Friday and Saturday as well as occasional mid-week nights. An ideal space for after work drinks and birthdays and when booking an area at Phonox for 9pm on a Friday or Saturday, you’ll benefit from free entry until 11pm for you and the rest of your group. Without a booking, you can still get on our free before 10pm guest list on Fridays and free before 11pm guest list on Saturdays. Over the course of the evening the space transitions into a club, showcasing all night sets from a variety of our most beloved selectors. On Mondays to Wednesdays Phonox plays host to an eclectic mix of promoters. Thursdays they welcome Brixton Disco Club; where on a weekly basis handpicked local DJs pay homage to dance music’s oldest cousin. Their Friday night program is about simplicity: one dance floor, one great soundsystem (Funktion One) and one act all night. Over the coming months they are delighted to have invited the likes of Jon Rust, Motor City Drum Ensemble and Dekmantel Soundsystem to play at Phonox. HAAI plays every Saturday. Phonox is also available for private hire on Sundays through Wednesdays, availability dependent.
